Scientifically, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contains the seed of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). This is an age-old question and actually has an answer - it's a both ! Yes it can be said both because Tomatoes are fruits that are considered vegetables by nutritionists. Yes, it is also true that botanically, a fruit is a ripened flower ovary and contain seeds.

In the case of Nix v. Hebden,  the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that tomatoes are vegetables, despite the botanical fact that tomatoes are fruits.😮 According to the concise Oxford Dictionary of Botany, a fruit is defined as "strictly, the ripened ovary of a plant and it's contents.

Nutritionists call tomatoes as vegetables.


Hence, despite technically being a fruit, the tomato is generally categorized as a vegetable.

Tomatoes are used in curries, soups & sauces. It is added in a long list of variety of food recipes. It is included in salads too. In some places like India, unripened tomato which is in green color is eaten in the firm curry. But, red ripened tomato is always much more healthier due to lycopene as compared to unripened green one. The more red the tomato is, the more it is rich in lycopene & other nutrients.

Of all the plant compounds found in tomatoes, lycopene is particularly noteworthy.Lycopene is the most abundant carotenoid in the ripened tomato and is found in the highest amount in the tomato peel. The rule of thumb is, the redder the tomato, the more lycopene it contains. 

Tomato products, such as ketchup, tomato juice, and tomato-based sauces, are the richest dietary sources of lycopene and provide more than 80% of the dietary lycopene in the US.The amount of lycopene in processed tomato products is often much higher than in fresh tomatoes.Ketchup for example, contains 10-14 mg/100 g but fresh tomatoes contain only 1-8 mg/100 g of lycopene.Other foods in the diet may have a strong effect on the absorption of lycopene from the digestive system.
