Scientifically, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contains the seed of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). This is an age-old question and actually has an answer - it's a both ! Yes it can be said both because Tomatoes are fruits that are considered vegetables by nutritionists. Yes, it is also true that botanically, a fruit is a ripened flower ovary and contain seeds.

Tomatoes are fruits.

In the case of Nix v. Hebden,  the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that tomatoes are vegetables, despite the botanical fact that tomatoes are fruits.😮 According to the concise Oxford Dictionary of Botany, a fruit is defined as "strictly, the ripened ovary of a plant and it's contents.

Nutritionists call tomatoes as vegetables.

Hence, despite technically being a fruit, the tomato is generally categorized as a vegetable.
Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant which is linked to many health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease and cancer.

Tomatoes are wonderful source of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and potassium. They are usually red when ripened. However, tomatoes come in yellow, green, orange & purple colors too. Tomatoes are used in curries, soups & sauces. It is added in a long list of variety of food recipes. It is included in salads too. In some places like India, unripened tomato which is in green color is eaten in the firm curry. But, red ripened tomato is always much more healthier due to lycopene as compared to unripened green one. The more red the tomato is, the more it is rich in lycopene & other nutrients.

Vitamins and Minerals

Tomatoes are a good source of several vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin C: An essential nutrient and antioxidant. One medium sized tomato can provide about 28% of the recommended daily intake.

Potassium: An essential mineral, beneficial for blood pressure control and cardiovascular disease prevention (3).

Vitamin K: Also known as phylloquinone, vitamin K is important for blood coagulation and bone health.

Folate (B9): One of the B-vitamins, important for normal tissue growth and cell function. It is particularly important for pregnant women.

Tomatoes are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, potassium, vitamin K and folate.

Other Plant Compounds

The content of vitamins and plant compounds can vary greatly between different tomato varieties and sampling periods. Here is a list of the main plant compounds in tomatoes.

Lycopene: A red pigment and antioxidant, which has been extensively studied for its beneficial health effects.

β-Carotene: A yellow antioxidant, which is converted into vitamin A in the body.

Naringenin: Found in tomato skin, this flavonoid has been shown to decrease inflammation and protect against various diseases in mice.

Chlorogenic acid: A powerful antioxidant compound, which may lower blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure.

Chlorophylls and carotenoids are responsible for the color of tomatoes. When the ripening process starts, the chlorophyll (green) is degraded and carotenoids (red) are synthesized (source : healthline).

The main plant compound in tomatoes is lycopene. They also contain beta-carotene, naringenin and chlorogenic acid.

Lycopene -
Of all the plant compounds found in tomatoes, lycopene is particularly noteworthy.Lycopene is the most abundant carotenoid in the ripened tomato and is found in the highest amount in the tomato peel. The rule of thumb is, the redder the tomato, the more lycopene it contains.

Tomato products, such as ketchup, tomato juice, and tomato-based sauces, are the richest dietary sources of lycopene and provide more than 80% of the dietary lycopene in the US.The amount of lycopene in processed tomato products is often much higher than in fresh tomatoes.Ketchup for example, contains 10-14 mg/100 g but fresh tomatoes contain only 1-8 mg/100 g of lycopene.Other foods in the diet may have a strong effect on the absorption of lycopene from the digestive system. Consuming it with fat can increase absorption up to 4-fold.However, there is some individual variability here, and not everyone absorbs lycopene at the same rate.Even though processed tomato products are higher in lycopene, it is still recommended to consume fresh, whole tomatoes whenever possible.Lycopene is the most abundant plant compound in tomatoes. It is found in the highest amounts in tomato products, such as ketchup, tomato juice, and tomato-based sauces.

Cardiovascular diseases including heart attacks and strokes are the world's most common cause of death. Intake of right amount of tomatoes can help in protection from heart diseases. Tomato contains lycopene and β-carotene. These two can help in protecting from cardiovascular diseases. A study conducted in middle-aged men suggested that low blood levels of lycopene & β-carotene are linked to high risk of heart attacks and strokes.
It was evident in clinical trials that intake of lycopene is effective in lowering LDL cholesterol.

The fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and choline content in tomatoes support heart health.
An increase in potassium intake, along with a decrease in sodium intake, is the most important dietary change the average person can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.
Tomatoes also contain folate. This helps to balance homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that results from protein breakdown. It is said to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The management of homocysteine levels by folate reduces one of the risk factors for heart disease.
Not only is high potassium intake also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but it is also known for protecting the muscles against deterioration, preserving bone mineral density, and reducing the production of kidney stones. Clinical trials of tomato products have shown that they are beneficial against inflammation and markers of oxidative stress. They protect inner layer of our blood vessels and can help in decreasing the risk of blood clotting.

Tomatoes aid in protecting heart.
The lycopene present in tomatoes prevents serum lipid oxidation, thus exerting a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases. A regular consumption of tomatoes has been proven to decrease the levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. These lipids are the key culprits in cardiovascular diseases and lead to the deposition of fats in the blood vessels.

Tomatoes start to ripen naturally due to gaseous hormone called ethylene preduced naturally in them. While
tomatoes that are produced by traditional methods are harvested and transported while still green and immature and artificial ethylene gas is used to make them red. This is artificial ripening method.
The disadvantage of this, is that it does not lead to the development of natural flavor, and may result in tasteless tomatoes.
Local tomatoes may therefore taste better, because they are allowed to ripen naturally.

Although tomato allergy is rare, they more frequently cause allergic reactions in individuals allergic to grass pollen. This condition is called pollen-food allergy syndrome or oral-allergy syndrome.

In oral-allergy syndrome, the immune system attacks fruit and vegetable proteins that are similar to pollen, which leads to allergic reactions like itching in the mouth, scratchy throat or swelling of the mouth or throat. People with latex allergy can also experience cross-reactivity to tomatoes.

Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiles a list of fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residue. These foods are known as the Dirty Dozen.
For 2017, tomatoes are number 10 and cherry tomatoes number 14 on the list. Though it has not been proven that eating organic foods has overall health benefits, the EWG suggests that people should buy organic tomatoes where possible.
Buying organic minimizes pesticide exposure, though this has not been definitively proven to prevent disease.

It is known that organic tomatoes are better but what makes them better ? Find out here -

Why Are Organic Tomatoes Better?

According to a study at the University of California,  organic tomatoes are produced in an environment that has a lower nutrient supply. Due to this condition ,nitrogen-rich chemical fertilizers are not added. This leads to excessive formation of antioxidants such as quercetin (79% higher) and kaempferol (97% higher) in organic tomatoes. As we all know, antioxidants are good for health and help in reducing heart diseases. Moreover, chemical-based tomato farming involves spraying tomatoes with large quantities of pesticides and insecticides. Tomatoes are a highly sprayed crop throughout the world. Therefore, many organic food lovers believe that they are protected from chemical contamination when they eat the organic ones instead. Of course, organic farming is good for the environment as well!
