Mint - A useful herb with medicinal properties.

                                                                                 


In our beauty blog,we talk about ways to be more beautiful naturally.I am posting reviews and tips there.And often a thought comes in our mind that is it enough to look beautiful ???
Well,it gives us confidence but of course health matters a lot !
  Health is wealth  and Beauty with health is icing on the cake something more fantabulous.
If you are healthy,you can do anything good.Health and beauty have such an association which can't be neglected.They are related to each other.Health is very important.

In this blog, I will write articles about health.I will post how simpler things,herbs available at our home are the easiest way to keep ourselves healthy fit and fine.We discuss here about various info.How these small wonders,fruits etc.can do miracle to us ??? How they are important and what they do ?

Today,In this article I am going to talk about a herb called mint.
So,here we go........

A detail of the plant :-
Common noun: Mint, Pudina etc.
Scientific noun:
There are many species of mint found and used worldwide like Mentha piperita,  Menta arvensis, Mentha X rotundifolia (L.) Huds etc.
Family. Sage family - Lamiaceae
Habitat: Near the rivers, ponds and some other humid places.
Botanical Name:Mentha Arvensis,Mentha piperita
Indian Local and common names :-Pudina , Mint ,koshu , horsemint.
Nature of Pudina Plant:-
This plant is related to the menthe genus and it is an aromatic herb. Many species grow wild; some of them are cultivated. The chief constituent for which these plants are valued are
menthol and peppermint oil.This medicinal plant is an erect branched herb upto about 55 cm high. Leaves upto 6 cm long. Flowers small, in small brunches, borne on axile leaves,”medicinal seeds” are also very useful.

There are three chief species of mint in cultivation and generally used : Spearmint (Mentha viridis), Peppermint (M. piperita), and Pennyroyal (M. pulegium), the first being the one ordinarily used for cooking.
Mint has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any food.Mint, also known as Mentha, is actually a genus or group of around 15-20 plant species including peppermint and spearmint.

     Allergies :- 

Mint plants contain an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent called rosmarinic acid which has been studied for its effectiveness in relieving seasonal allergy symptoms, revealing a promising natural treatment.



    Breastfeeding :- 

It is very useful for breastfeeding mothers.


    Soar Throat :- 

Mint contains menthol, a natural aromatic decongestant that helps to break up phlegm and mucus, making it easier to expel.Menthol also has a cooling effect and can help relieve a sore throat, especially when combined with tea.


    Indigestion  (Stomachic, Hepatic & Carminative) :- 

Mint is a calming and soothing herb that has been used for thousands of years to aid with upset stomach or indigestion.Mint is useful in diarrhea. Mint is thought to increase bile secretion and encourage bile flow, which helps to speed and ease digestion (and which may also support healthy cholesterol levels).Do you remember Pudin haraa.

     Antiflatulence :- 

Peppermint is also thought to relieve pain and discomfort from gas and bloating. Peppermint tea is a common home remedy for flatulence.

   Helps In Cirrhosis :- 

It is helpful in cirrhosis & is good for liver.


   Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS) :- 

The use of peppermint oil has been found to be an effective and safe treatment for those suffering from abdominal pain or discomfort associated with IBS.

 

   Gastric Ulcer :- 

In a study in animals, menthol was found to have a potential role in preventing gastric ulcers associated with alcohol consumption and regular use of painkillers.


   Pain Relief :- 

Applying peppermint extract externally has been found to get relief in humans.It is helpful in headache,stomach ache,backache and neck pain if taken internally or applied externally.

It is a very good sedative.

It is useful in kidneystone & gallstone.

It makes the fever down.

It is helpful in nausea.

Mint is a natural anti-microbial agent and breath freshener.It is helpful in maintaining oral hygiene.It is useful in bad breath.It's mouthwash helps in  Pyorrhea.

  Depression & Fatigue :-  

It is helpful in conditions of depression and fatigue. Mint is a natural stimulant, and the smell alone can be enough to charge your batteries and get your brain functioning on a high level again. If you are feeling sluggish, anxious, depressed, or simply exhausted, mint and its derivative essential oils can help.

  Female Sterility :- 

There are mixed opinions regarding the role of mint in treating this condition. Some argue that prolonged use of menthol may cause sterility, reducing a woman’s ability to conceive.

 

    Memory Loss :- 

A recent study explored the effects that mint has on alertness, retention, and cognitive function. It found that people who frequently use chewing gum, whose major active ingredient is mint, had higher levels of memory retention and mental alertness than those who did not. The stimulant qualities of mint, once again, have shown yet another reason to pop that stick of gum in your mouth, or chew some leaves when you’re feeling less than brilliant!


  Other Benefits :-  

Besides its wide industrial use in foods like ice-cream and chocolates, as well as in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, medicines, inhalers and breath fresheners, it is also used as a condiment and a decorative item in culinary preparation around the world.It I'd used for garnishing. Drinks and foods containing mint cool you off in the summer, and it is often included in summer cocktails for a refreshing burst of flavor. It is also a good relaxant.

One peculiar property of mint that seems quite contrary to its traditional cooling and soothing effects is that it induces sweating  if consumed during fever, thereby breaking the fever and speeding the rate of recovery. Mint juice can also be applied to heal & soothe burns. It is also beneficial in the treatment of rheumatism Furthermore, the herb is also said to improve activity of brain  although legitimate and consistent research on its neurological impact has yet to be completed.

  Nutritional Value Of Mint๐Ÿƒ :-  

Two tablespoons of fresh peppermint provides 2 calories, 0.12 grams of protein, 0.48 grams carbohydrates, 0.03 grams of fat and 0.30 grams of fiber. Mint contains small amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C, iron and vitamin A.3


 Potential Risk Of Consuming Mint ๐Ÿƒ :- 

๐ŸƒDo not use mint in an attempt to soothe digestive issues if your symptoms are related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); mint may exacerbate this condition.
๐ŸƒPeppermint oil, if taken in large doses, can be toxic. ๐ŸƒPure menthol is poisonous and should never be taken internally.
๐ŸƒDo not apply mint oil to the face of an infant or small child, as it may cause spasms that inhibit breathing.
๐ŸƒUse caution with mint products if you have or have previously had gallstones.
๐ŸƒSpeak with your health care provider to determine whether any of your medications could interact with mint or mint oil.There are many uses of mint but one important thing is we should always analyse side effects too.
