  TYPES OF ORANGES   🍊

Stroll through the produce section of your local grocery store and you’ll quickly notice that there are many different varieties of oranges to choose from. Oranges generally fall into one of three categories: sweet, bitter or mandarins. Sweet oranges are usually eaten or used to make juice while bitter oranges are used for making marmalades and orange-flavored liqueurs.

Mandarins also known as tangerines, are closely related to oranges but are actually a different variety of the same species. They tend to be smaller and sweeter than oranges and are easier to peel. The tangerine nutrition profile is also pretty similar with minute differences in the amounts of certain micronutrients.

Meanwhile, the navel orange is one of the most common types of oranges. They’re seedless with a thick skin and characteristic navel-like dimple on one end. Clementines, also sometimes called cuties, are another popular choice because of their small size and easy peel. The blood orange, on the other hand, stands out because of its distinct dark red flesh, which is thanks to the presence of anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant pigment.

Most commonly, oranges are peeled and eaten raw, juiced, or even added to your favorite dishes and desserts for a burst of flavor and nutrients. You can also grate the outer peel and add orange zest to baked goods, pasta dishes and sauces. Be sure to wash the orange thoroughly beforehand, however. Orange oil, which is extracted from the outer peel of the orange, can also be added to beauty products and cleaning supplies to boost the antibacterial properties and deliver a concentrated dose of antioxidants.

How To Select Oranges & Store?

Oranges are available from October till February. While buying oranges, always choose the ones that have a smoothly textured, unblemished skin, and are firm and heavy for their size. They should yield to gentle pressure but rebound quickly. These oranges are juicier than the ones that are either spongy or lighter in weight.

  1. Generally, smaller oranges have higher juice content than the larger ones as well as those having thinner skins.
  2. Avoid the fruits that have cuts, soft spots or traces of mold.
  3. Ripe oranges need not necessarily be bright orange in color. Sometimes their uniform orange color is due to the injection of an artificial dye called Citrus Red Number 2. Oranges can be fully ripe even if they naturally have green patches.
  4. Sometimes when the fruits are harvested from the tree using machines, they may sustain minor superficial injuries. Such small abrasions, however, do not affect the quality of the fruit.
  5. Oranges are one of those foods in which pesticide residues are frequently found, it is preferable to buy organic oranges. Choose fully ripened oranges to get the most antioxidants.

Storage:

  1. Oranges can be stored at room temperature in a cool dark place for up to a week but keeping them in the fruit/vegetable compartment of the home refrigerator can extend their shelf life up to 2 weeks.
  2. The best way to store them is to keep them loose in a fruit container rather than wrapping them in a plastic bag since exposure to moisture can cause them to develop molds.
  3. Freshly squeezed orange juice can be stored in a freezer compartment for later use. It can be kept in ice cube trays until frozen and then stored in plastic bags in the freezer.
  4. Dried orange zest should be stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight glass container away from moisture.

Tips for Usage (Eating/ Cooking) -  Being extremely delicious and juicy, oranges can be eaten on their own without any additions. You can easily remove their skin by scoring superficially with your fingers or using a knife. Remove the rind and fiber, and eat it after gently peeling off the membranes and seeds. Alternatively, the fruit can be sliced horizontally into two halves and eaten by scooping out sections of the halves with a spoon. Citrus fruits such as oranges can add a new twist to your recipes by imparting their tangy flavor as well as increasing the nutrient content. Given below are some of the tips for the usage of oranges in several recipes.

Orange juice is widely enjoyed all over the world. It is often added to mocktails and sodas. It is advisable to prepare orange juice at home instead of commercial drinks as they usually contain added preservatives and artificial colorants. For extracting the juice, the fruit should be brought to room temperature if kept in the refrigerator. However, extraction of juice decreases the antioxidant and insoluble fiber content of the fruit to a great extent.

  • Orange fruit sections can be a great addition to green and fruit salads. You can prepare a delightfully refreshing salad by combining orange segments, fennel and boiled beets. Spiced orange salad can be a colorful first course. All you need to do is peel some fresh oranges and thinly slice them crosswise. These can be tossed with onions, olives and fragrant vinaigrette made with cumin, curry, cilantro, and mint.
  • Sweet potatoes, winter squash and orange segments can be simmered in orange juice and sprinkled with walnuts while serving.
  • You can make a refreshing cocktail by combining freshly squeezed orange juice, pineapple juice and guava nectar with rum.
  • An intense sorbet can be created by adding a small amount of sugar to orange juice. You can provide a topping of grated bittersweet chocolate to prepare a yummy drink with a healthy dose of vitamin C.
  • Orange zest (peel) can be used in preparation of popular dishes due to its rich flavor. Store bought chocolate muffin mix can be combined with chopped almonds, fresh orange juice and zest to make a delicious dessert. To prepare the sauce, orange juice and sugar can be simmered on the stove for 10 minutes and drizzled over each slice. It can then be garnished with a hint of orange zest.
  • I am vegetarian & even i  along with my family, don't eat eggs. But, for those who love salmon,  marinade can be prepared by combining tart-sweet oranges, fresh rosemary and crushed fennel seeds. This will impart a subtle flavor to broiled salmon fillets.
  • Dried orange blossoms and leaves are used in the preparation of herbal tea.
  • The delicious strawberry salad can be served as a dessert or as a starter to any meal. All you need to do is cut the oranges in advance and drizzle homemade basil syrup 30 minutes before serving for a great flavor.
  • For those who love eating salmon & tuna. Onion and ginger can be sautΓ©ed and then orange juice can be added to the pan. This liquid can be used as a sauce for salmon and tuna.

  •     SPECIAL NOTE :-  There are a variety of orange types on offer that can aid in various conditions from heart health to diabetes. Oranges should be picked at their peak of ripeness because unlike some other fruits, they do not ripen or improve in quality after being picked. Oranges should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
While it is hard to find good fruits and vegetables in the winter, it is the perfect time to buy citrus. Winter is the peak season for oranges and other citrus fruits.
There are many different types of oranges available such as navel, mandarin, cara cara, blood oranges, Valencia and Seville oranges just to name a few. Some are very sweet and others have more of a sour taste. Tips for oranges: Keep a bowl on the kitchen table or counter stocked with fresh fruit from the season. Seeing the fruits readily available will likely cause you to choose them as a snack more often rather than raiding the cupboards for a less healthy snack.

  • Make a fruit salad with strawberries, pineapple, mandarin oranges and grapes.
  • Add some orange slices to your salad at lunch or dinner. Compliment the oranges with walnuts or pecans, a crumbled cheese and a light balsamic or citrus vinaigrette dressing.
  • Make your own juice! Nothing tastes better than freshly squeezed orange juice in the morning. When you make your own, you can be sure there are no added preservatives or sweeteners.

  •    RISKS :-

Beta-blockers, a type of medication most commonly prescribed for heart disease, can cause potassium levels to increase in the blood. High potassium foods such as oranges and bananas should be consumed in moderation when taking beta-blockers.
Consuming too much potassium can be harmful for those whose kidneys are not fully functional. If your kidneys are unable to remove excess potassium from the blood, it could be fatal.
Those with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) may experience an increase in symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation when consuming highly acidic foods such as citrus fruit, however individual reactions vary.
It is the total diet or overall eating pattern that is most important in disease prevention and achieving good health. It is better to eat a diet with variety than to concentrate on individual foods as the key to good health.
While orange nutrition benefits are pretty impressive, it’s important to remember that the same benefits may not extend to orange juice. This is because oranges contain a good amount of fiber, which helps slow the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream. Orange juice, on the other hand, provides a concentrated amount of the sugar found in oranges, without any of the beneficial fiber. Commercial varieties, in particular, are pumped full of sugar and additives, minimizing the nutritional value of orange juice. Some people may also need to keep their intake of oranges in moderation or eliminate them from the diet altogether.
Although rare, some people may be allergic to citrus fruits like oranges. Food allergy symptoms can include itching, swelling and even anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. If you experience these or any other adverse symptoms after eating oranges, discontinue use immediately and speak with your doctor. Oranges are also very acidic, which may aggravate heartburn and acid reflux symptoms in those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. If you notice that oranges cause negative side effects like a burning feeling in the chest, nausea or belching, consider reducing your intake.
