This article of mine is about the various health benefits of pomagranate. In India it is also known as 'anar'.

So, let's explore................

   Pomagranate Nutrition  ♤♤♤

There are many pomegranate health benefits. For starters, the pomegranate is loaded with nutrition. Pomegranates are known for their high antioxidant content. In particular, there is an extremely powerful antioxidant found in the peel and juice of the pomegranate called punicalagins. Studies have even found that pomegranates contain triple the amount of antioxidants than green tea.

Pomegranates are also a great source of other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc. Not to mention that pomegranate also contains nearly half of the required intake of dietary fiber for the average person. It is also a valued source of protein.

The pomegranate is a fruit that contains hundreds of edible seeds called arils. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive plant compounds, but they also contain some sugar.
Pomegranates Contain Two Plant Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties

There are two unique substances in pomegranates that are responsible for most of their health benefits.

Punicalagins

Punicalagins are extremely powerful antioxidants found in the juice and peel of a pomegranate.
They are so powerful that pomegranate juice has been found to have three times the antioxidant activity of red wine and green tea.
Pomegranate extract and powder is typically made from the peel, due to its high antioxidant and punicalagin content.

Punicic Acid

Punicic acid, also known as pomegranate seed oil, is the main fatty acid in the arils.
It is a type of conjugated linoleic acid with potent biological effects.
Pomegranates contain punicalagins and punicic acid, unique substances that are responsible for most of their health benefits.

Here are the health benefits of pomagranate ♤♤♤

1). Pomegranate provides a great source of vitamin C

Eating one pomegranate a day (approximately a 100 grams one) will provide you with 17% of your daily recommended amount of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an essential component that your body needs for a healthy immune system, and will help you to fight off coughs and colds in the winter.

2). Pomegranates can help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Pomegranates can actively help to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood and adds the friendly cholesterol, HDL. This can help prevent high blood pressure and reduce the risk of strokes.

3). Pomegranates can help treat skin inflammation.

Thanks to healing and anti-inflammatory properties
This tiny wonder fruit has great healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains polyphenols and, if you eat the fruit, drink the juice or apply pomegranate seed oil directly to inflamed skin, it will soothe your skin and help to heal any inflammation.

4). Reduces Blood Pressure

Pomegranates can lower high blood pressure—a major precursor for strokes and heart attacks. It’s the punicic acid in pomegranates helps lower blood pressure. In a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, researchers suggested that daily pomegranate juice consumption for two weeks significantly lowered high blood pressure in 21 hypertensive patients.

5). Reduces Cholesterol and Heart Disease Risk

The antioxidant content and punicic acid found in pomegranate juice can fight atherosclerosis, decrease plaque formation, and improve overall heart health. A 2010 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that 800 mg daily of pomegranate seed oil could significantly reduce triglycerides and improve the overall high density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio. Another study from 2005 found that daily pomegranate juice consumption may improve stress-induced cardiac ischemia in coronary heart disease patients.

6). Helpful Food for Cancer Prevention and Treatment

The benefits of eating pomegranates or drinking pomegranate juice also include protection against cancer. The anti-inflammatory properties, vitamin C, and other antioxidants in pomegranates play a part in the preventative cancer effects. Studies have found that pomegranate extract can help induce cell death in prostate cancer cells and breast cancer cells. Pomegranate can also help treat and prevent lung and skin cancer.

7).Supports Good Digestion

The fiber in pomegranate help support good digestion. Pomegranate juice is often used to treat digestive conditions like cholera and severe diarrhea. A 2013 review published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine  supports the anti-inflammatory activity of pomegranate juice, seeds, flowers, and peels in the digestive tract and gut.

8). Improves Memory

Evidence suggests that pomegranates can improve memory and prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease. In a 2013 study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, pomegranate juice was found to improve visual and verbal memory after four weeks. In the study, 32 people each drank an eight-ounce glass of pomegranate juice or a flavor-matched placebo drink. Another study from 2006 found that pomegranate juice reduced the accumulation and deposition of amyloid in the brain by 50% in mice. The polyphenols found in pomegranate juice are thought to provide positive cognitive benefits.

9). Helps Treat Joint Pain and Arthritis

Arthritis is a major problem for adults over the age of 50. Luckily, pomegranate can also improve osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and overall joint pain. In a 2005 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, pomegranate extract and its compounds were found to block enzymes that can cause joint damage. Researchers concluded that pomegranate extract could impede cartilage dilapidation in osteoporosis and help maintain joint function. Studies also support the protective effects of pomegranate juice against arthritis in mice.

10). Lowers Stress Levels

Pomegranates can lower oxidative stress in the body, and they can also reduce psychological stress as well. In a 2012 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science, Queen Margaret University researchers found that pomegranate juice could reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol in 28 volunteers. Cortisol is often elevated when a person is under stress. Study participants consumed either 500 ml of pomegranate juice or 500 ml of a placebo drink.

11). Beneficial for Fighting Bacterial and Fungal Infections

The benefits of eating pomegranate also include antifungal and antibacterial abilities against bacterial infections and candida. A study published in 2010 found that pomegranate extract was highly-effective at fighting candida infections. Another study from 2013 found that pomegranate extract could inhibit the activity of infectious pathogens, including Candida albicans, Escherichia coli (E. coli), methicillin resistant S. aureus, and Stephylococcus aureus.

12). Helps Protect Against Dental Plaque

The health benefits of pomegranates include protective anti-plaque effects. In a 2011 study published in the journal Ancient Science of Life, researchers found that pomegranate juice could significantly reduce plaque forming by 32%. The polyphenols in pomegranate juice are thought to contribute to the antibacterial effects against dental plaque. Pomegranates can also treat other dental conditions such as periodontitis, gingivitis and denture stomatitis.

13). Reduces Kidney Problem Complications

The potassium and antioxidants in pomegranates offer protective effects against kidney diseases and dialysis-related infections. In a study from 2010, researchers suggested that potassium found in pomegranate juice could lower dialysis-related complications in kidney patients, including less infections, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

14). Improves Sexual Performance And Fertility

Pomegranate juice may help improve sexual performance and fertility. Research by C.P. Forest, published in the "International Journal of Impotence Research" in 2007, revealed that pomegranate juice improves erections in men with erectile dysfunction. This may be due, in part, to the effect of pomegranate juice on nitric oxide, a substance that enables smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels -- such as in the penis -- to relax, widen and increase blood flow. Research by L.J. Ignarro, published in "Nitric Oxide" in 2006, demonstrated that pomegranate juice has potent antioxidant activity that protects nitric oxide from being destroyed and augments its biological action on smooth muscle cells in blood vessels. Consumption of pomegranate juice also improves sperm quality, according to research by G. Turk, published in "Clinical Nutrition" in 2008.

15). Boost immunity

Being rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, pomegranates are extremely healthy for those suffering from immune-related disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and osteroarthrits. They are also rich in vitamin C, which boosts antibody production and development of immunity. Pomegranates can thus help you maintain a healthy immune system and stave of common illnesses and infections. Read about how turmeric can boost your immunity.

16). Increase your libido

Since ancient times, pomegranates have been considered as a symbol of fertility. According to a research conducted by researchers from Queen Margaret University, a glass of pomegranate juice boosts testosterone levels in both men and women. This property makes natural aphrodisiac that is great for your sex life. Also, studies suggest that pomegranates contain certain compounds that are similar to sex steroids found in the human system, explaining why it improves sex stamina and desires.

17). Keep you looking younger

Ever wondered why we grow old and our skin develops wrinkles and other signs of ageing? Well, it is because of free radical damage that affects your cells. Polyphenolic compounds in pomegranates are powerful antioxidants that can delay the process of aeging. Therefore, eating pomegranate keeps your skin glowing and radiant for a long time. Here are 5 ways pomegranates keeps your skin healthy.

18). Lowers stress levels

Apart from reducing the body’s internal oxidative stress, pomegranates also help lower psychological stress that you go through your personal and professional life. According to a study conducted by Queen Margaret University, people who drank pomegranate juice had lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that is increased under stressful situations.

19). Keep Alzheimer’s at bay

Imagine being stuck on a road having forgotten where you live? Think if you forget why you are in market...what's your name ??? Quite frightening !!! If you wouldn’t want it to happen to you for real, pomegranates should form a part of your daily diet. Researchers suggest that pomegranates play in important role prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. A study conducted by Hartman and colleagues showed that pomegranate juice reduces the deposition and accumulation of amyloid in the hippocampus region of the brain by 50%, which could be considered for Alzheimer’s disease improvement. Here’s how pomegranate can help prevent Parkinson’s disease along with Alzheimer’s.

20). For Weight Loss

Another pomegranate health benefits is that it is high in antioxidants. If taken daily, it can help you in controlling your body weight. You can take the fruit in your daily diet and lose those extra calories. The high fiber content will also make sure that people feel more satiated after its consumption.

21). Prevents Diarrhea

Pomegranate has been said to be a great natural remedy for diarrhea due to its natural astringent properties. But, consuming too much pomegranate juice could cause constipation.

22). Prevents Cell Damage

The presence of antioxidants in high quantity fights against the free radicals which usually attack the cells and damage them. Regular consumption of this fruit can keep your body cells and tissues healthy.

   Other Pomagranate Health Benefits ♤♤♤

There are also other pomegranate health benefits. For instance, pomegranates are considered a natural aphrodisiac. In other words, they can boost your libido and treat conditions like erectile dysfunction. The benefits of eating pomegranate include protect the skin from wrinkles and treating acne breakouts.
Pomegranates can also help decrease hunger, reduce your risk of diabetes, and decrease symptoms associated with anemia. Studies have also found that the nitrates in pomegranate can improve exercise performance. Pomegranates will last for a couple of months when they are placed in a plastic bag and stored in the refrigerator.

RISKS in consumption of pomagranate ♤♤♤

1). DRUG INTERACTIONS

Pomegranate juice is healthy to drink daily. However, it may interfere with some prescription drugs, such as medications that treat high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Research by A.V. Sorokin, published in the "American Journal of Cardiology" in 2006, revealed that consuming pomegranate juice may increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis -- a condition involving muscle breakdown that can cause kidney failure -- if you are taking rosuvastatin, a drug that treats high cholesterol. Before drinking pomegranate juice on a daily basis, talk with your doctor.

2). INCREASES BLOOD SUGAR

Pomegranate juice has highly concentrated sugar content. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, or USDA, a 1-cup or 8-oz. serving of pomegranate juice has 134 calories and 31.5 g of total sugars -- approximately 50 percent from glucose and 50 percent from fructose. This is almost the same sugar content as a 16-fl. oz. size of cola soda that has 128 calories and 31.13 g of total sugar. Drinking high concentrations of sugar may increase your blood sugar.
