EWG gives ratings to sunscreens. It rates each sunscreen on a scale of 1 to 10. Here, 1 represents "Safe" while 10 shows "dangerous". This grading is based on following five criteria :

1).  HEALTH HAZARDS -
Here, factors like hazardous ingredients are present or not in a sunscreen that are considered dangerous, are used to rate a SPF.

2). UVB PROTECTION -

3). UVA PROTECTION -

4). THE RATIO OF UVA ABSORBANCE TO SPF

5). HOW LONG-LASTING THE SUNSCREEN IS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UVA AND UVB

Northwestern Researchers stated in a Time magazine interview that :

🌞♢🌞 UVB rays -

They can lead to sun burns and skin cancer. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measurement of how effective the product is against those rays. UVB rays usually burns  the superficial layers of your skin. It plays a key role in development of skin cancer.

🌞♢🌞 UVA rays -
These rays come in contact with you everyday. They pierce deep into the skin because they aren't filtered by the ozone layer, and they can lead to skin darkening and aging in addition to skin cancer. UVA rays penetrant deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer. Unprotected exposure can lead to premature skin aging and wrinkling (photoaging), and suppression of the immune system.
